Randwick Public School prides itself on identifying and developing the skills of students with a passion for public speaking and engaging in rich debate.
Public Speaking
Developing public speaking is a great feather in the Randwick Public School cap and students are given the opportunity to practise these skills through a number of platforms, most notably, the school-wide Public Speaking Competition. Students engage in prepared and impromptu speaking which supports their growth in confidence and the ability to speak in front of large audiences. Those who show a particular aptitude in this area are also able to demonstrate these skills at regional events alongside peers from other schools.
The Multicultural Public Speaking Competition
For 23 years now the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition has been encouraging primary school students to explore ideas of multiculturalism in Australia, as well as giving them a place to practise their public speaking skills and improve their confidence. At each stage of the competition contestants present both a prepared speech on a multicultural topic and an impromptu speech on a broader idea or concept.
Debating
Students in Year 5 and 6 are afforded the opportunity to audition for the senior debating teams. Each team competes in the Premier’s Debating Challenge and the Sydney Primary Schools Debating Competition where they have experienced great success over a number of years.
