Community Languages Program

At Randwick Public School, we are proud to offer the Community Languages Program for students in Years 2–6. This program gives children the opportunity to strengthen or develop skills in their background or heritage language, while also welcoming non-background speakers to join in. It’s a wonderful way to celebrate harmony, diversity and unity across our school.

Through learning another language and culture, students gain more than just communication skills. They build confidence, develop a deeper appreciation of multiculturalism and broaden their understanding of the world. This experience supports their sense of identity and belonging, while enriching our whole school community.

The program is taught by specialist, qualified teachers and is built into the regular school timetable. Each group enjoys a minimum of two hours of dedicated language learning per week.

At Randwick, students can study Mandarin or Italian, opening doors to new opportunities and global connections.

Mandarin

The Mandarin program at Randwick Public School focuses on building students’ confidence to communicate in Chinese while deepening their understanding of Chinese culture. Students come with diverse backgrounds and experiences, and lessons are carefully differentiated to meet individual learning needs.

Through engaging activities, students broaden their horizons and develop a love of learning. Cultural knowledge is woven into the program, with opportunities to explore Chinese classics, calligraphy, songs, poetry, drama and festival traditions. This rich learning experience encourages students to do their best and become curious, diligent learners.

Italian

Benvenuti! At Randwick Public School, students enjoy weekly Italian classes taught in a fun and interactive way. Lessons come to life through stories, role-plays, games, songs and chants, helping students build vocabulary and use Italian in meaningful ways.

Students become “language detectives,” noticing connections between English and Italian while exploring cultural similarities and differences. Themes are studied across the year, giving students the chance to learn the language while also gaining an appreciation of Italian traditions, history and culture. From Tombola (Bingo) to songs and stories, Italian is always lively, engaging and full of discovery.
